Virtual Playa looks awesome in Microsoft Flight Simulator, but for those of use who can't or won't run it, FlightGear from http://www.flightgear.org is a possibility. FlightGear is freely available and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.

I converted some of the Virtual Playa models that Andrew posted in January(?) of last year for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 to FlightGear. Those converted files can be found at http://ptolemy.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cxh/sapub/flightgear.htm
There are various problems with the converted files, which are documented on that page. In particular, the converted files _do not_ work on the Mac yet

Unfortunately, the recent files from the Virtual Playa January 2004 release do not all convert. I'll see what I can do, but I'm swamped with some other tasks. Any C programmers out there want to take a shot?

Fellow folks,
Burningman is a festival of radical self expression held in Nevada's Black Rock Desert (or "playa") at the beginning of September. It is a beacon for some of the most amazing large scale artists in the world, and becomes the fifth largest city in Nevada, before it vanishes without a trace.

We have developed a project called the Virtual Playa Project. It is a complete scenery pack designed for Microsoft flight sim, and allows users to navigate the art and city of Burningman in great detail. It has recently been featured on CNN, Wired and Tech TV, and It may be the most fun scenery ever designed for flight sim.... and its FREE!!

Our experiment this year is to be running the project live from the desert each night between 9:00pm and midnight (maybe later!) form Monday29th August to Saturday 3rd September, and opening multiplayer rooms at zone.msn.com to allow anyone from anywhere in the world to join us for a guided tour.

You will first need to download and install the scenery pack from http://virtualplaya.org/ or you will only see blank desert!

If you are lucky enough to be on the playa, come by and see us in Centercamp & 3:30 and we will show you whats up.

If you want to participate in this experiment, please contact me at Andrew@virtualplaya.org so we can get everyone on the same page.
Thanks for your participation... See you in the desert!

It is intended to be an open-ended project that invites participation at various levels. It can be downloaded for home use; played on a giant screen at an Anon Salon event, or even be used as a design tool for DPW or an artist wishing to show a preview of an installation before it ever gets to Black Rock City.
